Bills clinch 2022 AFC play off berth with win over Dolphins
With tonight’s thrilling 32-29 win over the Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills (11-3) have officially clinched a playoff spot in the 2022 AFC Playoffs.
The Bills rallied from a 29–21 deficit to win on the final play of regulation on a Tyler Bass 25-yard field goal.
It was only the third time in franchise history that the Bills reached the playoffs in four consecutive seasons (1963–1966, 1988–1993) and the team’s third-straight season with 11 or more wins.

Sean McDermott has coached the Bills to playoff berths in five of his first six seasons. He is the first current NFL head coach to lead his team to the playoffs in each of the last four seasons – Chiefs HC Andy Reid and Titans HC Mike Vrabel could join them by clinching playoff berths of their own this season.
The Bills got off to a fast start to the 2022 season, winning five of their first six games. After back-to-back losses in Weeks 9 and 10, the Bills bounced back with four wins in a row. They currently lead the AFC East by three games and hold the No. 1 seed in the AFC with three games left in the regular season.
Another feat accomplished on Saturday night was Josh Allen’s 50th regular season win as a Bills QB.
Next up, Buffalo could win the AFC East with a win over the Bears on Christmas Eve.
afc east standings
1. Bill
Record: 11-3
Opponent: At Bears, At Bengals, vs. Patriots
Bills fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Despite not even being done after Week 15 yet, it looks like the AFC East title division is all but wrapped up for the runaway preseason favorites in the division after Saturday’s win.
The next step is of course maintaining the No. 1 seed in the AFC as the Chiefs continue to rotate. The Week 17 game against the Bengals, which could also be a post-season preview, could well be squared off on the Bills’ calendar.
2. Dolphins
Record: 8-6
Opponents: vs. Packers, vs. Patriots, vs. Jets
With a pair of divisional games, the Dolphins are far from the woods. Their three game losing streak has left them out of the AFC playoff picture. Although making the playoffs would have been seen as a victory in the preseason, missing them would now be considered a downfall.
The good news for the Dolphins is that they could be a wrecking ball in their division as the Patriots and Jets battle beneath them. While this is not the time to panic in Miami, it is not unreasonable if hearts start racing a bit given the recent results.
3. Patriot
Record: 7-6
Opponent: at Raiders, vs. Bengals, vs. Dolphins, at Bills
The toughest part of the Patriots’ run is their schedule.
They enter the AFC on Sunday as the last team in the post-season, but after the Raiders they have tough games against the Bengals, Dolphins and Bills, all of whom will make it to the playoff position or even their playoff lives. Can duck for. If the Patriots lose and the Chargers and/or Jets win, each game will carry even more weight.
4. Jet
Record: 7-6
Opponents: vs. Lions, vs. Jaguars, vs. Seahawks, vs. Dolphins
Going back to pre-season speculation, pick a Jets fan off the street and tell them the team is 7-6 with four games to go against these opponents, and believes the playoffs are a complete lock. But this schedule is skewed. The Lions and Seahawks have legitimate playoff aspirations in the NFC, the Dolphins are battling in the AFC, and even the Jaguars are out of danger.
However, the Jets clawed their way to this point, as have those teams, and whether it was Mike White or — as is Sunday’s case — Zach Wilson at quarterback, they earned their records with timely scoring and toughness. Have done Defense. Even with that tough remaining slate, their schedule is arguably more favorable than the Patriots’. The team seemed to still be in rebuilding mode at the start of the season, so this conversation is important as well.
All four AFC East teams are very much alive in the playoff race, even with their flaws and inconsistencies. The Bills have closed all the divide, but don’t expect anyone to go on the gas. They are all playing for too much.
