First pictures of King Charles bank notes revealed 2023
The Bank of England has released the new design for banknotes that include the picture of King Charles.
The £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes will have only a portrait change to their current design and will begin to enter circulation from mid-2024.
The new notes will have the king’s portrait on the front and a transparent security window.

Even after the introduction of new notes, the existing notes will be accepted in the shops.
Starting in 1960, Queen Elizabeth was the first and only monarch to have Bank of England banknotes in circulation. The monarch is not shown on the notes that Scottish and Northern Irish banks have printed.
There are currently approximately 4.5 billion individual Bank of England notes in circulation worth approximately £80 billion.
The Bank of England said that, following guidance from the royal household, the new notes would only be printed to replace old notes or to meet increased demand, to reduce the effects of the change on the environment and the economy.
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, said he was “proud” to mark a “significant moment” with the new design.
Fifty pence coins featuring the image of King Charles III have already entered circulation through post offices across the country.
An estimated 4.9 million new coins are being delivered to post offices – nearly half of the total number set for circulation – to be given to customers in return.
Coins bearing the late queen’s image will still be accepted in shops at the same rate as bank notes.

Cash usage has fallen drastically compared to debit cards, mainly due to the use of contactless payments and then accelerated by the COVID pandemic. Rising prices have also reduced the purchasing power of specific coins and banknotes.
However, there is still a keen interest among consumers and collectors regarding the images used on the cash.
Collectors will be especially excited to obtain the lowest serial numbers when new King Charles banknotes appear.
