No. 22 Xavier hands No. 2 UConn its first loss 83-73

CINCINNATI (AP) — Colby Jones added 16 points, Zach Freemantle added 16 points, and No. 22 Xavier defeated No. 2 UConn 83-73 on Saturday. This was No. 2 UConn’s first loss of the year.

Despite having limitations during warm-ups due to an illness, Zack Nunz began the game for Xavier. He did not rejoin the team until a few minutes into the half after halftime, but finished with 15 points in 24 minutes. Jerome Hunter also had 15.

Adama Sanogo led UConn with 18 points. Andre Jackson Jr. scored 14 points and Jordan Hawkins scored 11 for the Huskies.

Xavier (12-3, 4-0 Big East), which entered the AP Top 25 rankings this week, had three losses by a combined 13 points to Indiana, Duke, Gonzaga.

UConn (14–1, 3–1 Big East) had its best start since the 1998 season 19–0 start and won its first NCAA championship. The Huskies’ worst start since 1994-95 was halted by their defeat on Saturday, leaving only No. Purdue and The only unbeaten Division I teams this season are 22 New Mexico.

The teams had split the previous two meetings, making this the sixth overall between the two institutions.

In the first half, Xavier had a 10-point lead, but UConn was able to tie the score thanks to seven mistakes, including four by Jones. Halftime score for the Huskies was 41-42, with Sanogo scoring 10 of them.

UConn: Depth has been a hallmark of this Huskies squad, with 10 players averaging more than 14 minutes a game. All nine players who played on Saturday scored for the Huskies.

Xavier: Turnovers have been an issue for the Musketeers, who averaged 14.1 turnovers this season coming off 15 or more. They only had five turnovers in the second half on Saturday after having seven in the first half.
